History of Calvary Academy

Calvary Academy is located in South Holland, IL, a southern suburb of Chicago. The school began in 1970 when the vision for a Christian school originated with Rev. Ronald Brown, pastor of the Calvary reformed Church. Rev. Brown and a small group of Christian businessmen were able to implement that vision for a quality education centered around God and His Word.

Calvary Academy opened its doors in September of 1970 with an enrollment of 134 students in grades pre-school through nine with eight teachers. The school started in the facilities of Calvary Reformed Church in South Holland, IL. In September of 1971, the school moved to a new facility, which is the first wing of the present building complex.

In the following years, three additional grades were added to the high school, and the staff was increased to handle the additional classes. In 1988, Calvary’s board of governors made the difficult decision to close the high school. In that same year, Calvary Academy became accredited with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). On July 1, 1989, Spirit of God Fellowship became the spiritual covering for the school.

Since the early days, there have been four major building projects, with the last one having been recently completed. Over the years, the school has consistently seen God’s hand of provision and guidance.

Calvary Academy is governed by a self-perpetuating board approved by the elders of Spirit of God Fellowship. The school’s operating budget is 97% funded by tuition while all capital expenses are provided by the church.

The school, currently kindergarten through eighth grade, has an enrollment of 345 students with 33 faculty and staff. The school population is 83% African-American, 14% Caucasian, and 3% Hispanic. Presently, there are over 126 churches represented among the families.
